1864-1930. British electrical engineer who
electrified central London. He made and sold
his first alternator 1881. Ferranti became
chief engineer with the London Electric
Supply Company 1887, and worked on the design
of a large power station at Deptford.
However, legislation permitting low-powered
stations to operate killed the scheme. He
resigned in 1892, moved to Oldham in
Lancashire, and in 1896 he opened a business
to develop high-voltage systems for
long-distance transmission.
