  1. 1864-1930. British electrical engineer who
  2. electrified central London. He made and sold
  3. his first alternator 1881. Ferranti became
  4. chief engineer with the London Electric
  5. Supply Company 1887, and worked on the design
  6. of a large power station at Deptford.
  7. However, legislation permitting low-powered
  8. stations to operate killed the scheme. He
  9. resigned in 1892, moved to Oldham in
  10. Lancashire, and in 1896 he opened a business
  11. to develop high-voltage systems for
  12. long-distance transmission.
